Although working at a computer may seem convenient, it often hides the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle. This can lead to pain in the back, neck, or even hands. Most Europeans sit an average of 6-8 hours a day, which is alarming. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to choosing the right office chair to help you avoid these problems. We have prepared a guide for you that will help you choose the optimal work chair.

We will discuss the most important selection parameters, which are:

  • comfort,
  • adjustability,
  • ergonomics,
  • endurance,
  • compatibility with the processing environment,
  • budget.

Comfort: Sitting on a Cloud

The most important thing when choosing an office chair is the comfort you want to achieve through it. However, comfort is not universal and everyone needs something different to achieve it. Therefore, consider what shape, material and dimensions best match your body proportions.

A proper comfortable chair should definitely have armrests and a headrest. A computer chair that ends halfway back or at the height of your shoulders will turn into a punishment bench over time.

It should definitely also be rotatable, so that when a colleague from the next table is talking to you, you don't have to turn your head unnaturally.

For added comfort, you can opt for padded armrests to ensure you don't bump your elbows.

Comfy and Practical Material

Upholstery is then a chapter by itself. It is about comfort and practicality. For example, a leather chair like this is very comfortable, easy to maintain, but in summer you will sweat like a seal in the Sahara.

The breathable mesh backrest is great in the summer, but its less insulating ability is not suitable in drafty environments, for example. The mesh seat is quite rare, but you can get it too. For example, people suffering from hemorrhoids will appreciate it. For us, the best all-year-round solution is chairs with a fabric cover, but there is certainly nothing wrong with mesh or leather or eco-leather. Follow your own preferences.

Adjustability

If you are looking for a high-quality office chair, be sure to focus on those with adjustable parameters. It is unlikely that a chair will fit your body right away without "tweaking" the height of the seat or armrests. In addition, the adjustability is extremely practical even if you take turns on the chair with other people. Everyone can then set it exactly as they need.

Seat

The seat height of the work chair should definitely be adjustable. This is one of the basic features that your chair should have. Most people are comfortable with a height between 40-54 cm off the ground, but it's ideal to fine-tune it according to your body structure. You set the correct height using the lever so that the entire length of your feet is flat on the floor and your knees are at a 90° angle.

Tip: If your desk is too high and your legs are too short, you can use a foot mat to help you achieve the right angle.

Armrests

Armrests should certainly have at least adjustable height, but ideally also depth and angle. Height is the most important because it determines the correct position of the hands in relation to the table.

Back rest

The supports can be firmly fixed (not recommended) or adjustable depending on the basic support mechanisms.

  • Asynchronous mechanism: thanks to it, you can adjust the inclination of the backrest and the seat independently of each other. What are the 3 levers for, where one adjusts the inclination of the backrest, the second the inclination of the seat and the third the height of the seat. This is the most flexible solution.
  • Synchronous mechanism: allows you to adjust the inclination of the backrest and the seat simultaneously (i.e. depending on each other). You can then block them in this position or let them move freely so that the chair actually constantly adapts to your movements. By copying your movements, the chair is perfectly ergonomic. However, constant movement is not good for some people.

Ergonomics: the Right Parameters for Healthy Sitting

Ergonomic chairs are designed to maximally support all principles of correct sitting. There are many of them.

For example, the mentioned 90° angle should be maintained in several places when sitting correctly, namely:

  • between arm and forearm,
  • between thighs and torso,
  • between the thighs and calves (90–105° in the knees).

The seat should be at least 3 cm wider than you on each side. And at the same time, it should end about 6 cm in front of your knee socket. In other words, it shouldn't be "snapped" all the way below the knees, so as not to restrict blood circulation.

Holding the Head

The fact that man is the smartest creature on the planet also brings a certain toll of a similarly large, heavy head that we must constantly balance on our neck in an upright position. Therefore, the work chair should also have a headrest to help you support it at the right angle. The height of the eyes should correspond to the height of the monitor, so that you do not have to bend your head forward and do not have pain behind your neck.

If you're using a laptop, or your monitor is too low, use a mat or monitor stand underneath it to raise it up. It seems like a small thing, but it works wonders.

Back Rest

You should try to keep your back in constant contact with the back support, over its entire surface. You can use additional lumbar supports that you attach to the cot to make it even more comfortable.

The following seat and armrest heights are recommended for individual body heights. Measurements are given in centimeters.

Durability: to Make the Chair Last for Years

We will now outline the appropriate materials to ensure that your computer chair will last for many years. First, let's go back to the upholstery.

Upholstery

In terms of durability, the best leather chairs can last for 10 years or more in great condition if properly maintained. You can oil them in different ways to keep the skin supple and smooth. Fabric chairs are also very durable, handling day-to-day use well, but will wear out more quickly than leather. Mesh surfaces are the least durable.

Abrasion resistance is also sometimes indicated by manufacturers for specific fabrics. This is a martindale unit. Common values for upholstery fabrics are around 25000 martindale. If you come across a 50 000+ martindale fabric, it means that it is very resistant to abrasion and will last you a really long time, even if you are more of a fidgety and fidgety person.

Additional Parameters

When choosing an office chair, also pay attention to its load-bearing capacity, otherwise it might suddenly go down like a roller coaster.

In terms of durability, we recommend choosing a steel or aluminum metal cross, although plastic ones are more affordable, but they crack more easily.

Workplace Compatibility: a Perfect Match

Also choose a work chair based on the surrounding environment. Will it fit your table? How will it move on the floor? Isn't it very robust? A common problem faced by workers is the incompatibility of a work chair with an office desk.

Do you have a height-adjustable chair that you've adjusted to fit you perfectly, but when you arrive at your desk, you find that your legs can't fit under it or you can't reach the keyboard? In that case, the solution is to buy a matching desk as well, or even the recently very popular height-adjustable desk.

It will also help you in the fight against a sedentary lifestyle. Many people nowadays alternate between sitting and standing while working. This combination is much more beneficial for our organism and work stimulation. With the height-adjustable table, you can choose the right position in relation to the chair and at the same time alternate between sitting and standing.

Tip: If standing work is not the right thing for you, at least take breaks at regular intervals in which you can stretch, walk around the office, stand by the coffee machine, etc. Try to break up your sitting.

Wheels

The material of the floor on which the chair will be placed is also important. According to it, you can also choose different types of wheels.

  • For hard surfaces (floating floors, parquet and lino), soft rubberized wheels are more suitable, which will not scratch this hard floor.
  • The opposite rule applies to soft surfaces such as carpets, where harder plastic wheels are suitable.
  • If you do not want the chair to move, choose gliders instead of wheels or a more expensive office chair that has wheels with a brake (it is automatically activated when you sit down).

Budget: Is It Worth Paying Extra for Quality?

Unfortunately, a truly high-quality office chair is not cheap equipment. So count on an amount over ten thousand crowns. On the other hand, you should consider that you spend almost a third of your working day on it. In addition, you will use a high-quality chair for many years. If the price still seems too high to you, try to calculate the time and costs of health massages and rehabilitation. You would probably have to undergo these if you opted for a low-quality chair that is not designed for long-term sitting. After all, it's about your health
